MJM 35z — A True Performance Yacht for Cruising and Entertaining
The MJM 35z is one of those rare boats that is equally at home taking friends out for an afternoon on the water or setting off with two people aboard for a week of coastal cruising. Fast, exceptionally efficient and remarkably easy to operate, the 35z combines the open-air enjoyment of a sophisticated day boat with the protection, accommodations and seakeeping of a true cruising yacht.
Designed by Doug Zurn, the 35z's long, slender hull form and low center of gravity give her a character underway that immediately separates her from the typical wide-beam outboard boat. Rather than simply riding over the water, the MJM's fine entry and modified deep-V hull are designed to slice cleanly through chop, delivering a softer, more controlled ride while maintaining excellent stability and efficiency. The design earned ISO Category B Offshore certification for stability and seaworthiness.
For a cruising couple, the 35z is particularly compelling. Twin outboards provide speed, reliability and easy service access while eliminating the traditional inboard engine room and freeing valuable space aboard. Joystick control makes close-quarters maneuvering remarkably simple, while the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer dramatically reduces roll when entertaining, relaxing at anchor or spending a quiet evening aboard.
The all-weather pilothouse is one of the boat's defining features. Opening electric windshields and large opening side windows can transform it into an open-air environment on a beautiful summer day. When the weather changes, it becomes a protected helm and living space with outstanding 360-degree visibility. The entire main deck flows on essentially one level, and port and starboard side boarding doors make stepping aboard from a floating dock exceptionally easy.
Below, the 35z provides the amenities a couple needs to genuinely cruise rather than simply spend an occasional night aboard. A comfortable forward lounge converts to a double berth, with a galley, enclosed head, excellent storage and generous natural light. The pilothouse settees provide additional sleeping accommodations when needed, allowing the boat to welcome family or another couple without compromising the simplicity that makes her such an appealing two-person cruising yacht.
Built Where the MJM Story Began
This 35z was built by Boston BoatWorks, the yard where the original MJM concept was developed, refined and brought to life.
That heritage matters.
MJM founder Bob Johnstone came from the performance sailing world and wanted a powerboat that was lighter, stronger, more efficient and more seaworthy than conventionally constructed production boats. To achieve that goal, MJM turned to Boston BoatWorks and master builder Mark Lindsay, whose experience included the construction of Olympic, World Championship and America's Cup racing sailboats.
The resulting construction was far removed from conventional production fiberglass boatbuilding. Boston BoatWorks employed an innovative wet pre-preg, vacuum-bagged and post-cured epoxy composite process, combining Kevlar, E-glass and Corecell structural foam. Reinforcing material was carefully impregnated with epoxy before being placed in the mold, allowing precise control of resin content. The completed composite structure was then vacuum consolidated and post-cured.
It was an approach much closer in philosophy to building a high-performance racing yacht than a conventional production powerboat: use superior materials, control weight, concentrate strength where it is needed and create a stiff, lightweight structure.
That lightweight structure is fundamental to the way an MJM performs. Less unnecessary weight allows the hull to accelerate easily, operate efficiently and maintain a lower center of gravity. Combined with the 35z's approximately 3.5:1 waterline length-to-beam ratio, fine entry and nearly 20 degrees of transom deadrise, the result is a yacht designed not simply for speed, but for speed with control, efficiency and comfort in a seaway.
One Boat, Two Personalities
Open the windshields and side windows, extend the aft Bimini and invite friends aboard, and the 35z becomes an outstanding day boat: open, social, fast and easy to maneuver.
Close her up, engage the climate control, load provisions into the galley and point the bow toward the next harbor, and she becomes something quite different—a capable, protected cruising yacht that two people can comfortably operate on their own.
That versatility is perhaps the greatest strength of the MJM 35z. She doesn't force an owner to choose between performance and comfort, day boating and cruising, or excitement and practicality.
She was designed to do all of it—and to make owners want to use their boat more often.
